OUR IMPACT
Over our long history, 98% of our sponsored girls who entered the program in elementary school have graduated from high school, avoiding child marriage and early pregnancy.
Each girl and mother who is part of the HIO community is remarkable in her own right. We celebrate all of their unique achievements and accomplishments. Below are a few stories of individuals who represent how HIO's educational interventions are truly transforming lives.
REACH FOR THE STARS
Sometimes the stars align and the outcome for one of our HIO young women is a burst of bright light. For Ikshya, who graduated from 12th grade in 2023, her HIO sponsorship led her to study in an excellent medical school about 50 miles south of her home in Kathmandu. How wonderful!
For weeks we’d been waiting to hear which of our girls might be offered a coveted place in one of Nepal’s few medical colleges. With nearly twenty thousand students taking the difficult and competitive medical exams, it’s a bit like waiting for your lottery ticket to be called. Fewer than three thousand spots were offered. Ikshya’s news is a celebration not only for her and her family, but also for the entire HIO Nepali team and her devoted sponsor, Ellen Weihenmayer.
ON HER WAY
Ten women who participated in HIO's Be Part of Her Dream (BPOHD) women's empowerment program for seven years piloted a one-year, innovative curriculum in 2023. The group is continues their journey toward financial independence through monthly personal budgeting and savings plan exercises. Hands-on vocational training gives them opportunities to hone practical and marketable skills. Meanwhile, seven of their BPOHD sisters entered adult education classes to earn high school diplomas, following seven BPOHD mothers who already earned theirs.
