About Hands in Outreach
We began nearly 40 years ago as a fledgling, grassroots effort to alleviate deep-rooted poverty for Nepali and Tibetan refugee children. Through the impact of education, HIO has evolved into a dynamic transformation for girls and women in the hidden slums of Kathmandu.
Living in one of the poorest countries in East Asia, Nepal’s women and girls traditionally have the least opportunity for education. To shift this debilitating narrative, HIO's family-centric programming encourages our girls to stay in school, avoiding early marriage, pregnancy and dead-end, low-wage menial jobs. We provide a hand up, not a hand out.
The success of our girls is our greatest inspiration. We help them navigate from a life of profound poverty toward a path of self-determination, self-reliance and financial stability, breaking an endless cycle of poverty needlessly passed for generations from mother to daughter.
